Collective action for social change around the issue of sexual violence

Social Movement: They have their inception in the condition of unrest, and derive their motive power on one hand from dissatisfaction with the current form of life, and on the other hand, from wishes and hopes for a new scheme or system of living. - Herbert Blumer

Bread and Roses

  • The Fridge 516-518 8th Street Southeast Washington, DC, 20003 United States (map)

Marking just over one year since the 2017 Women’s March on Washington, and building on #MeToo and recent attacks on gender equality, pop-up art exhibition Bread and Roses showcases the power of the communal fight for women’s equality.

Rose Schneiderman—women’s suffrage and labor activist, and founding member of the ACLU—coined the phrase “Bread and Roses” in 1911, inspiring James Oppenheim’s poem of the same name. Women deserve bread (equal pay and fair working conditions) but they must have roses, too (the right to beauty and a better life).

With the support of Fridge DC director, and legendary local graffiti artist, Alex Goldstein, we are bringing together artists and activists to start a grassroots conversation, support and uplift one another, offer resources, and achieve greater understanding.

The opening party on Thursday, February 22 from 7-11 pm will showcase performance, interactive, and multimedia art in addition to a book reading by author Sandi Giver of "One of Us: Sex, Violence, and Justice,.Resilience, Love, Hope." Other highlights include custom cocktails from Eatbar DC, original works from 18 visual artists, and a live sound collage by Aseem Suri.
